A recent violent incident in Kushtia’s Daulatpur has reignited political debate over law and order and the growing concern of “mob violence” in Bangladesh. Following an attack on a religious shrine that involved arson and the killing of a spiritual leader, the National Citizen Party (NCP) has strongly criticized the government’s handling of the situation.
In a press statement issued on Saturday (April 11), the party said that violence carried out in the name of alleged blasphemy is completely unacceptable. According to the NCP, the only legitimate way to address such sensitive accusations is through the legal system, and taking matters into the hands of a mob constitutes a serious criminal offense.
The party further stated that not only the direct perpetrators but also those who incited and planned the attack must be brought to justice. It argued that such incidents do not occur spontaneously and may involve silent support or protection from influential local groups.
The NCP also pointed out that “mob culture” is not a new phenomenon in the country. Similar incidents in the past—including attacks on religious sites, vandalism of shrines, and desecration of bodies—suggest a recurring pattern driven by provocation and possible political influence.
The statement also raised questions about the role of the Home Minister, noting that despite repeated promises to eliminate mob violence, there has been little visible progress. Allegations of weak law enforcement and, in some cases, political bias have also been mentioned.
According to the party, recent incidents show that “mob pressure” has even been used to force individuals to resign from different institutions, which it described as a serious threat to the country’s institutional stability. It added that while the government speaks against mob culture publicly, it has yet to demonstrate a firm and consistent stance in practice.
Analysts believe that such political statements reflect growing public concern over the country’s overall law and order situation. When violence emerges around religious or sensitive issues, failure to control it quickly can lead to wider instability.
The NCP has called on the government to take effective and impartial measures to restore order. It also urged the Home Minister to move beyond statements and take a more active role in addressing the issue on the ground.
Overall, the Kushtia incident highlights that mob violence is not just a law enforcement challenge, but also a broader social and political crisis that requires long-term and coordinated efforts to resolve.
