Political tensions have resurfaced at Rajshahi University following a wall-writing campaign by a student organization demanding a ban on what it described as “secret political activities” on campus.
The campaign, carried out on Wednesday afternoon, saw activists painting slogans in red and black across walls near the university’s central library. The dominant message called for an end to covert political operations, reflecting growing concerns among sections of student leadership about hidden organizational activity.
Leaders of the group alleged that certain organizations with controversial political backgrounds are attempting to re-establish themselves on campus under different identities. They argued that such concealed activity poses a threat to the stability and academic environment of the university.
Speaking during the program, the organization’s president said that any attempt to conduct politics under hidden identities would be resisted through both organizational and legal means. He also urged those involved to return to open and transparent political engagement instead of operating behind the scenes.
The group’s general secretary emphasized the importance of maintaining a transparent democratic environment on campus. He stated that in the current political context, covert activities are not acceptable and risk undermining trust among student groups.
Another senior leader added that while pluralism and respect for differing political views are essential in a democratic system, holding multiple political identities simultaneously creates confusion and raises ethical concerns within campus politics.
Organizers indicated that the wall-writing campaign will continue in phases across key locations within the university, signaling a sustained effort to push their demands.
The development comes amid a broader rise in student political tensions across educational institutions in Bangladesh. Just a day earlier, clashes were reported at a government college in Chattogram over graffiti-related disputes between rival student groups, leaving several individuals injured.
Analysts warn that unless transparency and tolerance are upheld in campus politics, such incidents could escalate further, potentially disrupting the academic environment and stability of universities.
