Powerful Rain Belt ‘Jhumul’ Approaches Bangladesh, Raising Flood Concerns in Several Regions

A powerful rain system known as “Jhumul” is advancing toward Bangladesh, signaling a significant shift in weather patterns and raising concerns about heavy rainfall and potential flooding in several parts of the country.

According to a report by the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team, a private meteorological research group, the system is nearly fully developed and could bring widespread thunderstorms and rain across much of the country. The organization described it as one of the most intense weather systems observed so far this year.

Forecasts suggest that between 70 and 90 percent of the country could experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, with some areas likely to see heavy to very heavy downpours. Meteorologists warn that the scale and intensity of this system may disrupt daily life and impact agriculture.

The Sylhet division is expected to be among the most affected regions. In addition, parts of Mymensingh, Rangpur, Dhaka, and northern areas of Chattogram may experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Barishal and Khulna divisions are also likely to see moderate activity, while some areas in Rajshahi division may be comparatively less affected.

The rain belt is projected to influence the country in phases from April 26 through May 7. The period between April 28 and May 2 is expected to be the most active, with additional spikes in rainfall intensity anticipated around May 4 and May 6.

Low-lying and flood-prone areas in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions face an increased risk of flash flooding during this time. Temporary waterlogging may also occur in districts such as Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Netrokona, Brahmanbaria, and Kishoreganj.

Experts note that heavy rainfall in upstream regions of India, particularly in Assam and Meghalaya, could lead to a surge of water flowing downstream into Bangladesh. This may cause rapid rises in river levels in the northern and northeastern regions, increasing the risk of flooding in haor areas and surrounding নদী systems.

Sustained rainfall is also expected in parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet, which could disrupt agriculture and daily activities. Authorities are advising residents, especially those in vulnerable areas, to remain cautious and follow official guidance.

While the approaching system may bring temporary relief from heat, experts stress that the associated risks—including flooding and waterlogging—should not be overlooked. Preparedness and awareness will be key in minimizing potential damage.
