On-Duty Police Constable Dies in Khulna, Suspected Self-Inflicted Gunshot

The death of a railway police constable while on duty in Khulna has raised concern, with authorities initially suspecting that the incident may have been a case of suicide involving his service firearm.

The incident took place early Saturday morning in the armoury area of the Khulna Railway District Police office, located in the Sonadanga residential area of the city. The deceased has been identified as Samrat Biswas, 27, a resident of Kashiani in Gopalganj district.

According to railway police officials, Biswas was assigned to guard duty in the armoury section during the early hours. Between approximately 4:30am and 5:00am, he is believed to have shot himself in the head using his issued Chinese rifle, resulting in his death at the scene.

Confirming the incident, Khulna Railway Police Superintendent Ahmed Mainul Hasan described it as deeply tragic. He said preliminary findings suggest it may have been a suicide, although a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.

He added that Biswas was known among colleagues as a responsible and dedicated officer. Initial assumptions indicate that he may have been under mental stress due to personal or family-related issues, although no such concerns had been formally expressed to coworkers.

Police sources said the victim’s wife, Puja Biswas, is also a member of the police force and is currently posted in Satkhira district. Following the incident, a preliminary report has been completed, and arrangements are being made to hand over the body to the family.

Authorities confirmed that legal procedures are ongoing, and efforts are being made to identify the circumstances that led to the incident.

The case has also prompted renewed discussion within law enforcement circles about mental health and workplace pressures faced by police personnel.
