A pir was killed in a violent attack centered around a shrine in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia. The incident also involved vandalism and arson at the site.
The incident took place around noon on Saturday (April 11) in the Darogar Mor area of Philipnagar Union. The deceased was identified as Abdur Rahman, also known as Shamim (65), who locally managed a shrine.
According to police and local sources, a video recently circulated on social media allegedly showed him making controversial remarks on religious matters. Although some sources stated that the video was old, its renewed spread created tension in the area.
As the situation escalated from the morning, police were deployed at the scene. However, a group of agitated individuals later carried out an हमला on the shrine. During the attack, the structure was vandalized and set on fire.
During the attack, Pir Shamim and several others were seriously injured. They were rescued and taken to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Shamim dead. The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment.
Fire service personnel later arrived at the scene and brought the fire under control. Police subsequently deployed additional forces to restore order in the area.
District police officials stated that an investigation is underway to determine how the video resurfaced. Efforts are also ongoing to identify those involved in the attack and bring them under legal action.
Authorities have increased the presence of law enforcement in the area, and the situation is currently reported to be under control.
