Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has taken a firm stance shortly after assuming office, removing a minister just 15 days into his tenure over allegations of nepotism.
On Thursday, Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Deep Kumar Sah was dismissed from his position. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the action was taken following accusations that he had abused his authority to facilitate the reappointment of his wife.
The decision was made based on a recommendation from the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Party president Rabi Lamichhane alleged that the minister had used his influence to secure his wife’s reappointment to the Health Insurance Board even after her term had expired.
According to the Prime Minister’s press advisor, the party’s disciplinary committee investigated the matter and recommended the minister’s removal, prompting swift action from the Prime Minister.
Following the dismissal, Balendra Shah is currently overseeing the Labor Ministry himself. Additionally, Health and Population Minister Nisha Mehta has been warned for failing to take appropriate action regarding the issue.
Balendra Shah came to power in March following strong support from young voters. He formed the government with promises to combat corruption and ensure transparency in governance. Analysts view this swift decision as a reflection of his commitment to those pledges.
Political analysts believe that such decisive actions by the new government send a strong message about accountability in administration and signal a strict stance against the misuse of power in the future.
