The local administration has imposed Section 144 in Tarakanda, Mymensingh, to prevent potential clashes stemming from internal conflict within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The situation has created heightened tension across the area.
The order was issued on Sunday (April 19) at noon by Upazila Executive Officer Md. Aminul Islam. He stated that two rival factions of the local BNP had announced separate programs at the same time and location, raising concerns over possible deterioration of law and order. As a result, Section 144 has been enforced from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
According to local sources, a long-standing dispute has existed between the two BNP factions centered around the Mymensingh-2 constituency. Tensions escalated further following a recent incident in which supporters from both sides were involved in verbal arguments and physical altercations.
In response to the incident, one faction announced a protest program, prompting the opposing group to declare a counter-program. This raised the risk of both groups confronting each other in the same area.
In this situation, the administration took a precautionary stance and imposed Section 144 to avoid any potential conflict.
Officer-in-Charge of Tarakanda Police Station, Tanvir Ahmed, said that police are deployed in the field to prevent any untoward incidents and that the situation is currently under control.
Analysts believe that without effective measures to resolve internal political disputes, such situations may become more complex in the future.
