Thunderstorm, Lightning, and Hail Alert Issued for Five Divisions

Bangladesh is bracing for sudden seasonal storms, with the Meteorological Department issuing warnings for today. From 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the five divisions of Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet may experience severe thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and isolated hail.

According to forecasts issued for river ports, these areas may see gusty winds blowing from the west or northwest at speeds of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour or higher. As a result, a number 2 (revised) warning signal has been raised for the river ports in these divisions. The general public is advised to exercise extreme caution during this period.

Other districts are also expected to face winds of 45 to 60 kilometers per hour along with rain and lightning. Consequently, river ports in these regions have been instructed to display a number 1 (revised) warning signal. Residents living near rivers and embankments are urged to secure temporary barriers and water storage to minimize risks.

Weather experts explain that such sudden storms typically occur due to abnormal temperature and humidity patterns. The intensity of rainfall may be higher in hilly or low-lying areas, which could increase the risk of flash floods in small rivers and canals. Local authorities have been instructed to keep emergency management and relief supplies ready.

Additionally, electrical storms may disrupt power connections, so people are advised to stay in safe locations and avoid high-risk areas. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and the sick are particularly encouraged to remain indoors.

Over the past few days, sudden rainfall and storms have intensified across various regions of the country. The Meteorological Department’s alert aims to help local administrations and communities prepare and reduce potential risks.
