Several accused individuals in the murder case of student Abu Saeed, who was killed during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur, are still absconding. Among them are former police officials, a physician, and leaders and activists of a student organization.
According to case documents, multiple officials, including a former commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, remain outside of arrest. In addition, a physician and several leaders and activists from the Begum Rokeya University branch of a student organization are also listed as absconding.
Abu Saeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead on July 16, 2024, during ongoing student protests in Rangpur. A video of the incident later spread across social media, triggering widespread outrage across the country. The footage showed him being shot while standing on a road, intensifying public anger.
Following the incident, a case was filed on charges of crimes against humanity. On June 24 of the previous year, the investigation agency submitted a report naming 30 individuals as accused. Later, on August 6, the tribunal formally framed charges in the case.
The trial proceedings officially began on August 27 with opening statements. Testimonies were subsequently recorded in phases and were completed on January 14 this year. Later, on January 27, both the prosecution and defense concluded their arguments.
The case is now awaiting a verdict. However, the fact that several accused individuals remain absconding has raised new concerns about the effectiveness of the judicial process and law enforcement, according to relevant observers.
